Toby Ellison
Co-founder
Based in London, Toby works with clients across Europe and more widely, including the Middle East and APAC.
In over 15 years of executive search, Toby has focused primarily on the private equity investment market, hiring for both investors and for leadership positions in portfolio companies, across multiple sectors. Prior to this, Toby worked at Deloitte, where he specialised in institutional fundraising for PE funds. In his first career in the Royal Navy, he achieved early-stage command at sea and specialised in maritime security operations globally.
Alongside leading Woodward, Toby founded Argo Navis Ltd in 2018 and has partnered with 1805 Ltd on numerous joint ventures. Toby is a Trustee of the naval charity, The White Ensign Association.
Simon Black
Co-founder
Simon is a senior advisor to clients across the Defence sector. He enjoys working directly with the Board and Executive teams of organisations, supporting them across executive search, leadership assessment and with advisory services in support of strategic business growth, investment and transformation.
Simon is based from London and in addition to his UK mandates, works with international clients 30-40% of his time. Simon works extensively in Australia, Middle East and USA.
Formatively in the Royal Navy for 10 years, Simon was promoted to be a commanding officer before leaving the Service and transitioning in to the Executive Search industry in 2000. He subsequently joined Russell Reynolds Associates and worked there as partner over 13 years, leading the financial services practice from London.
In addition to Woodward, Simon leads 1805 Limited and he is a Board member of the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity. He is also a certified senior executive coach and graduated with Meyler Campbell.
